Financial advisor for Melbourne tech executives

I’m Mike Sikar, a Sydney based financial adviser who works with tech executives right across Australia, including a growing group in Melbourne.

We meet on Teams. I’m in Melbourne a couple of times a year, so we can catch up for a coffee too.

Who I help

Melbourne tech leaders with RSUs, super and equity

The global tech companies all have big Melbourne teams. My Melbourne clients are Sales Directors, VPs and senior leaders at those companies.

Their pay looks a lot like my Sydney clients’ pay: a strong base, commission and RSUs vesting every quarter. The tax rules on RSUs and super are federal, so the same strategies work in Melbourne as in Sydney.

Where Melbourne is different is property. And right now, that matters.

We’re usually a good fit if you’re 40 or over, earn $400K or more, and have $500K or more in super and $1M or more in home equity.

My practice is built entirely around tech executives. I’ve been doing this for 18 years. Very few advisers in Australia specialise in tech, and the scope of advice I give, from RSUs and employee share plans to commission, super, property and structures, is hard to find in Melbourne. That’s why many Melbourne clients choose to work with a Sydney adviser.

Why Melbourne clients choose us

  • Specialist RSU and ESPP knowledge, built from years of working only with tech executives.
  • 9 years in stockbroking on top of 18 years in financial planning, so your share portfolio gets an investor’s eye, not just a planner’s.
  • In house mortgage broking. Loan restructures, refinances and debt recycling, handled by my own team. Learn more.
  • Modelling you won’t get elsewhere. Our retirement income modelling maps your assets and income year by year, out to retirement.

Melbourne property in 2026

Melbourne is down. Is it time to buy?

Melbourne values have fallen. Cotality’s figures show Melbourne dwelling values dropped 6.2% over the year to September 2026, and sat 7.5% below their March 2022 peak. They were still falling.

A lot of clients, in Melbourne and Sydney, are asking me whether this is the time to buy. Some already are. Nobody can pick the exact bottom. But before you buy, three things need to be in the plan:

  1. Negative gearing has changed. Under the 2026 Budget, from 1 July 2027 losses on established homes bought after 12 May 2026 can only be offset against residential property income. They can’t reduce the tax on your salary. New builds can still be negatively geared.
  2. Victorian land tax starts early. In Victoria, land tax applies from $50,000 of taxable land value for individuals, plus the COVID debt levy. In NSW the threshold is $1,075,000. On a Melbourne investment property, it’s a real holding cost.
  3. Cash flow. Without negative gearing against your salary, the property has to stack up on its own numbers. We model the cash flow before you sign anything.

I help you decide whether a property fits your plan at all and, if it does, how to structure it. See property strategy.

To be clear, I’m still pro property. High income earners should use good debt. The rules have changed, so the type of property matters more than ever. Plenty of my clients are now buying commercial property instead. The rent is usually higher, and the 2026 Budget changes don’t apply, so it can still be negatively geared against your salary.

RSUs and shares

Shares are the other side of the story

Here’s the part most people miss. The 2026 Budget changes to negative gearing don’t apply to shares and ETFs. Interest on money borrowed to invest in shares can still be deducted against your salary.

That’s why debt recycling into a share portfolio is getting so much attention from my clients right now. And if you hold RSUs, you’re already invested. The real question is whether you’ve got too much in one stock.

CGT has changed too. From 1 July 2027, the 50% CGT discount is replaced by indexation and a minimum tax for new gains. Gains made before that date keep the 50% discount, even if you sell later, so there’s no rush to sell. It just needs to be in the plan. See RSU advice.

Working together

How we work with Melbourne clients

  • Teams meetings. Every meeting runs on Teams, so it fits around your day.
  • Everything online. Documents, signatures and reports are all digital.
  • Coffee when I’m in town. I’m in Melbourne about twice a year and catch up with clients while I’m there.
  • Or come and see us in Sydney. If you’re up for work, drop into our office at Level 26, 25 Bligh Street.

Distance doesn’t change the advice. The plan, the team and the yearly reviews are exactly the same as for a Sydney client.

How it works

Your Early Retirement Blueprint in 30 days

We start with a free Early Retirement Clarity Call on Teams. If we’re a fit, we build your Blueprint.

Your Blueprint maps everything you own: RSUs, super, your home and any investment properties. Then it shows how they can grow into $15K to $25K a month of retirement income, using conservative assumptions.

It takes 30 days and costs $5,500, with a 100% money back guarantee. After that, my team puts it in place and reviews it every year as your Personal CFO.

See a real example: the tech couple with a plan to retire in 10 years.

I work with around 150 clients and take on 4 new clients a month. Once we reach 200, my books close.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a Melbourne office?

No. Our office is in Sydney, at Level 26, 25 Bligh Street. Melbourne clients meet with me on Teams, and I catch up in person when I’m in Melbourne, about twice a year.

Is it a problem that my adviser is in Sydney?

No. Super, tax and RSU rules are federal, so they’re the same in Melbourne. The big state differences are property taxes like land tax and stamp duty, and we plan around them.

Should I buy an investment property in Melbourne now?

It depends on your whole plan, not just the market. Prices are down, but negative gearing on established property has changed and Victorian land tax starts at $50,000. We model the numbers before you decide.

What does it cost?

The Early Retirement Blueprint is $5,500 with a 100% money back guarantee. Ongoing advice is explained on our Personal CFO page.

Why work with a Sydney adviser instead of someone in Melbourne?

Because specialist advice for tech executives is hard to find. Most advisers see a bit of everyone. My practice is built entirely around tech professionals: RSUs, employee share plans, commission, super and property. That depth is why clients in Melbourne choose to work with us, and Teams makes the distance a non issue.
